When one thinks of being pro-life, you usually thinks of activities: participating in the March for Life, protesting outside abortion clinics, etc. For some, these important actions are not possible and therefore leave them struggling to support the pro-life cause. Well, they shouldn’t worry, as they are overlooking the importance of prayer. Not only is prayer something one can do in the comfort of his home or on the way to work, but also connects one to the people who participate in those actions as prayers are constantly offered to God during both the March for Life and vigils.
The Power of Prayer
The most beautiful thing about prayer is that it is an intimate experience between you and God. No matter where you are in the world – whether it be your bedroom, a grocery store, chapel, or your car stuck in traffic—these places instantly become sacred in your conversations with God.
Like most things, you get what you give in prayer. If you half-heartedly mumble an Our Father, God will of course still listen, but you may not feel the full effect of the prayer. Prayer is a dual gift with God listening and if in His will answering, and you receiving the reassurance that God is with you and inspiration to make the change you prayed for possible.
For all those who dismiss prayer, can you think of a force more powerful than having God as your partner? So imagine the strength of a prayer asking God to reach the heart of the young woman entering a clinic when forty or so people join in. Like Saint John states, “And we have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked him for is ours,” then surely lives will be saved (1 John 5:14).
Spiritual Adoption
If you ever find yourself stuck on how to pray pro-life, try spiritual adopting a baby. For this type of prayer, you “spiritually adopt a baby known by God to be at risk of abortion by praying a special prayer daily for nine months.” Using a special prayer card, you name your baby and offer up the prayer.
Holy Family Prayer
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to protect the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted. Mary, our Mother in Heaven, pray for us, and especially for your little ones! Because God loves every baby He creates, I promise to pray for my spiritually adopted baby for nine months.
Additionally, each month you learn about your baby’s development. For example, by week 8 (2 months) every organ is present.
Once your little guy or gal reaches nine months, it’s time for a birthday party. Gather up some friends and throw a fun party. Each guest will bring a baby gift such as diapers or clothes that will be donated to a crisis pregnancy center.
Praying for your child doesn’t stop after the party though. This September, I will be coming up on the tenth birthday of baby Leo, and I’m still praying for him with all my might.
Prayer Is Essential
The value of prayer for a pro-lifer is immeasurable. Whether making a long-term commitment like spiritual adoption, or sending up a petition for woman still making a choice, the prayer is heard by God and help put into action.
Let us ask God that our silent voices in prayer mimic those of the unborn and potential mothers who feel powerless.
