Every now and then a song jumps out at you because it expresses exactly what you’re thinking and feeling but can’t quite put into words yourself. Matthew West’s song Untold was one of those songs for me: it captures the importance of what Generation Life is all about.
The Beauty of a Single Life
This song poignantly focuses on the potential of the life of an unborn child. The great tragedy of abortion is that a life is snuffed out too early. That child could have become someone’s best friend, someone’s teammate, someone’s parent. That child could have grown up to discover a cure to cancer or become President. Every life is full of possibilities that we simply can’t fully understand or see in the present. It’s only in hindsight, and maybe not even until we reach Heaven, that we can appreciate how all the pieces fit together into a perfect picture. What we can be assured of is that every person is a special, irreplaceable gift from God.
Writing Straight with Crooked Lines
Hopefully, you’ll never be in a situation where you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy or tempted by abortion. But we all have places in our lives where we’ve messed up and we want to hide that mistake. Things don’t always happen the way we want them to. Sometimes we make mistakes or things happen beyond our control that seem to set our life off in the wrong direction. Fortunately, God knows this and can bring good out of what seems like a terrible situation. St. Augustine is credited with saying that God writes straight with crooked lines. This is the great fact about God: he is more powerful than any evil. His mercy and love are so much greater than any of our sins or failings. He loves each of us more than we could ever hope to be loved and he desires our holiness more than we do.
Because of God’s limitless love for you, what appears to be failure is an opportunity for God’s love and mercy to be revealed. There’s power in our powerlessness because God is able to reveal to us who he is. He can turn that shameful mistake into something beautiful, something that you can actually rejoice in.
Matthew West’s Untold Lyrics
I am the news that nobody expected.
I was never a part of your plans.
I’m the reason why life,
As you know it feels like,
It’s slipping through your trembling hands.
And the doctor say I’m just an option.
A mistake, you can make, disappear.
I may not have a voice,
But I’m more than a choice.
I’m as real as the heartbeat you hear.
So don’t close the book on me yet.
I still got a long way to go.
Empty pages to fill,
And the best part is still down the road.
I am a story untold.
I am God’s miracle in the working.
Proof that all things can work for the good.
I’m fingers and toes,
And heaven already knows,
The name you pick out to me, already belongs to me.
So don’t close the book on me yet.
I still got a long way to go.
Empty pages to fill,
And the best part is still down the road.
I am a story untold.
Every life is sacred.
Every life is a gift.
And every life deserves the chance to live.
I know you’re scared,
I know you’re scared,
I know you’re scared right now.
But when you hear my first cry,
When you look at y eyes,
You’ll understand why,
You’ll understand why,
Why you brought me to life.
So don’t close the book on me yet.
I still got a long way to go.
Empty pages to fill,
And the best part is still down the road.
I am a story untold.
